“Tha talks reet funny” - By Chris Toffer ©

They say Yorkshire folk - they “talk reet funny”,

Using words like brass instead o’ money.

If nardendee really means now then you,

What does a Yorkshire visitor do?

They rack their brains and their face turns red,

T’aint their fault they weren’t born and bred,

In Yorkshire where they’d grow to understand,

It’s the finest place throughout the land.

Our dialect is special and down to earth,

Outsiders try to speak it to our mirth,

We don’t mince our words and we don’t worry

If they can’t understand, there’s no need to hurry.

Show no emotion and youv’e done the job,

Say it tight lipped wi a fag in yer gob.

Ey lad, bereet and gerrusanother,

Can only be understood by a Yorkshire brother.

It’s our secret and we’re proud orrit,

Joining up words and makin em fit,

Inta long words wi out any space

But theve’ gorra be spoken wi a straight face.

It’s the way it is , and it’s through evoilution,

Hard manual graft helped forge this solution,

Changing the language so it rolls off the tongue,

It is worrit is and it didn’t take us long.

We’re proud of our dialect and worrits become,

Taint our fault tharrits not understood by some.

But there is one way you can end all the fuss...

Move to Yorkshire and be one of us!
